"Education in music is most sovereign, because more than anything else, rhythm and harmony find their way into the secret places of the heart." -Plato
PHILOSOPHY OF MUSIC EDUCATION
Music is a thread that is deeply woven into our culture. There is not a single civilization on this planet that has removed music from its heritage. It gives the ability to understand where we, as human beings, have come from and to where we are going. Thus, it plays a critical role in teaching students about their cultural heritage and the wonderful diversity that the Earth holds.
All students need to have music as part of their educational experience. Children need to be introduced to music at a very early stage in life as early childhood development in music will dramatically effect the realization of their musical aptitude. Whether they are involved in band, choir, orchestra, or a general music class, all students need to experience music to become more well rounded individuals. Upon graduation, all students should have a basic understanding of musical concepts and fundamental aspects of music. All students need to be able to sing or play an instrument and show improvement. Not only should students know the basic musical elements including modes, melody, harmony, and notation, but they should also be able to pick up a piece of music and know what it should sound like by just looking at it with out actually playing the music. Also, students should be able to critically listen to and analyze music in a meaningful way. The ability to listen to and analyze extended pieces of music can greatly enhance enjoyment for the listener; otherwise the sounds may not make sense to the ears. Finally, they should be exposed to a variety of styles and genres of music, and understand how music is a part of our society and culture and how it relates to other cultures and societies. Music teaches the 21st century skills which will prepare students for success in the competitive global economy.
Study of the voice or an instrument encourages self discipline through practice and responsibility by performing in various ensembles. Even those who may never participate in an ensemble but only a general music class can be creative and independent with their thinking. Although music has been shown to have positive affects in other fields such as science and math, it is one of the most unique forms of expression in the human experience.
